Christopher Lee says he got too close for comfort to his co-star, Taiwanese actress Sonia Sui, in their first drama collaboration Mr Right Wanted.
SINGAPORE: “It was really awkward!” said actor Christopher Lee with a laugh, when asked about his first collaboration with Taiwanese actress Sonia Sui in the upcoming romantic drama Mr Right Wanted, during a media conference for the show on Saturday (Nov 15).
“When we shot our first scene, we didn’t know each other well … but the director wanted to shoot him coming really close to my ear. He wanted to shoot Christopher’s breath blowing on my hair! I suddenly became really shy!” said Sui.
“At the time, I was just worried that I may have bad breath!” Lee quipped.
That was the first of many such intimate scenes between them in the drama, which sees Lee play Lun Zhe Ming, a handsome, wealthy businessman who meets Li Hai Ning, a writer who has lost faith in love, after she posts an online notice seeking potential marriage partners.
However, things take an unexpected turn when he finds out Li isn’t meeting with all the candidates in search of a suitable partner for marriage, but simply doing research for her new book about online marriage-seeking.
“I think my character and I share a common outlook on love. We are both very committed and manage our relationships very carefully. The biggest difference between us is he’s a lot richer than I am!” Lee said with a chuckle.
Sui, on the other hand, said she is very different from her character because she still believes in love and feels that marriage is “an integral part of life”, before going on to reveal that working on the drama had actually changed her views on people who choose to remain single.
“In the past, I felt that people are social animals and they don’t want to be alone. So when I hear people say they don’t need love or don’t need marriage, I'd feel they were just putting on a strong front.
“But after working on Mr Right Wanted, I realised not everyone is lucky enough to meet the right person who understands them completely, someone with whom they would want to start a family. I really started to empathise with those who choose to stay single, because my character meets a lot of men who want to get married for reasons other than love, and I realise there are people who want to get married for reasons like revenge, to have an heir, or because of familial pressure,” said Sui.
The lanky actress added that acting alongside Lee in the drama has also changed her perception of him.
“To many women, he is viewed as a cool guy, but he is actually very childlike and would have the biggest reaction to a joke! He always laughs a lot! I think this actually improved my perception of him. I think he’s beyond perfection!” gushed Sui.
“You all can ignore the rest of the interview. Just make sure you write that part down!” Lee told reporters as he burst into laughter once more, before returning the compliment and praising Sui for being a joy to work with.
